Epidemiology
- Prevalence in United States between 500,000 and one million
- 85-90% of patients are women
- Severe cases account for 10% of total
- Subacute onset common, with full development of symptom complex in weeks to months
- Subsequent major deterioration is the exception, not the rule
- Symptom severity waxes and wanes in intensity
- Up to 50% of patients experience temporary spontaneous symptom remission with mean duration of 8 months
- Childhood bladder problems 10-times more common in IC patients than controls
- IC patients have twice the incidence of history of urinary infection as do controls
- Quality of life of IC patients as compared to patients with chronic renal failure on dialysis.
