AUA 2010 - Efficacy of epididymectomy for postvasectomy pain syndrome: Comparison of patients with a history of vasectomy with those without - Session Highlights

SAN FRANCISCO, CA USA (UroToday.com) - Forty-nine patients underwent 53 epididymectomies for chronic scrotal pain. Eighteen cases (16 patients) had a previous history of vasectomy (group A). Twenty-one cases (19 patients) had chronic epididymitis (group B), and 14 cases (14 patients) had epididymal cyst (group C) without a history of vasectomy.

The mean pain scale score decreased significantly. Epididymectomy seems to be a more effective treatment option for patients with a previous history of vasectomy than those without.

One should be cautious before embracing epididymectomy for pain control. Appropriate diagnostic maneuvers should be employed. Therapeutic interventions should be progressive.
