CHICAGO, IL USA (UroToday) - This group of researchers reported that while the prevalence for PD has been reported as high as 20% in some studies, those studies were largely comprised of groups of Caucasian men.
This Japanese study included 1,090 men (the control group) who received a routine health check and 130 males who were undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. All patients completed IIEF-5 questionnaires. The mean age of the hemodialysis group was 57.3 (range 39-71) while the mean age was 59 years for the control group. Among the hemodialysis patients, the prevalence of PD was significantly increased (n=12, 9.2%). The control group had a PD prevalence of 0.6%. None of the PD patients were using angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers.
