WCE 2011 - Prospective evaluation of patient satisfaction with treatment outcomes after shock wave lithotripsy and ureteroscopy for ureteral stones - Session Highlights

KYOTO, JAPAN (UroToday.com) - In an interesting study by Jinsung Park and colleagues, 160 consecutive ureteral stone patients who underwent either shockwave lithotripsy (SWL, n=65) or ureteroscopy (URS, n=95) were evaluated for typical clinical outcomes.

They also asked to complete a patient satisfaction questionnaire covering 4 domains including pain, hematuria, voiding symptoms and time to recovery. Not surprisingly, stone free rates were greater in the ureteroscopy group than in the SWL group - even after multiple sessions. The overall satisfaction rates between the 2 groups was comparable, however, satisfaction rates for hematuria, voiding symptoms and recovery time were all significantly better for the SWL group.

The importance of these findings is the ability to pre-operatively discuss with patients, not only expected clinical outcomes, but also subjective findings.

Presented by Jinsung Park at the 29th World Congress of Endourology & SWL (WCE) - November 30 - December 3, 2011 - Kyoto International Conference Center - Kyoto, Japan
