WCE 2011 - High fidelity team-based simulation training: Laparoscopic renal vein injury scenario - Session Highlights

KYOTO, JAPAN (UroToday.com) - Applying simulation-based training at the team level has also gained significant interest, as optimized technical and non-technical (communication) skills are crucial in improving patient care outcomes, particularly during crisis situations in the operating room.

Urologists from California evaluated the implementation of a high-fidelity simulation-based team training scenario involving both urology and anesthesiology residents in the management of a laparoscopic renal vein injury. They found that while technical skills correlated with level of training, communication skills did not.

Residents and faculty members both felt that this was a useful instruction method to teach both technical skills as well as communication and interpersonal skills.
