WCE 2011 - Urinary continence after laparoscopic radical prostatectomy: Association with urethral length measured by real-time intraoperative transrectal ultrasonography - Session Highlights

KYOTO, JAPAN (UroToday.com) - The session finished with a focus on continence and an interesting new idea to help reduce positive surgical margins.

Two abstracts worth mentioning both dealt with membranous urethral length and recovery of continence (Absts. MP 28-11 and 28-12).

Additionally, Hurtes, et al. (Abst. 28-15) presented the findings of a randomized trial comparing anterior suspension plus posterior reconstruction (Rocco) versus a standard van Velthoven technique. Although a rather small study group, the authors indicated a modest but significantly quicker recovery of continence in the study group at 1 and 3 months compared to the van Velthoven group.

Lastly, in an effort to improve oncologic outcomes, we always seem to battle a risk for increased positive margins. The team from Kochi Medical School in Japan (Abst. 28-18) presented potentially interesting clinical results using photodynamic technology to diagnosis positive surgical margins at surgery. With very preliminary results, they reported sensitivity of 75% and specificity of 85%.
