EAU 2011 - Perioperative, oncological and functional outcomes of laparoscopic renal cryoablation and open partial nephrectomy: A matched pair analysis - Session Highlights

VIENNA, AUSTRIA (UroToday.com) - Small renal masses are increasingly treated by radio frequency ablation or cryoablation.

The authors matched 41 patients who had undergone laparoscopic cryoablation with 82 patients who had undergone partial nephrectomy for kidney cancer. The authors found that laparoscopic cryoablation and partial nephrectomy provided comparable outcome in terms of complication rate and renal function. However, laparoscopic cryoablation resulted in higher local recurrence rate of 15% after 3 years. It was concluded that laparoscopic cryoablation should reserved for high-risk patients.

A local recurrence rate of 15% is not acceptable. Patient selection for cyroablation remains unclear. High-risk patients may benefit from watchful waiting.
