EAU 2018: The Analysis Of Urolithiasis Incidence In The Contralateral Kidney Of Uninephrectomy Patients

Copenhagen, Denmark (UroToday.com) In this poster presentation, Dr. Zou and team analyzed the incidence of urinary stone formation in the contralateral kidney of nephrectomy patients. They evaluated 1048 patients who underwent uninephrectomy from June 2010 to June 2016 including follow-ups. Of the 1048, only 164 patients had a history of stones prior to their surgery. Any incidences of stone after their procedure, was recorded for all patients.

Follow up time varied from 05 to 6 years with a mean of 3.2 years. For the duration of the study, the authors found stone formation in the contralateral kidney in 8.5% of the 1048 patients evaluated. Not surprisingly the patients with history of urolithiasis had a higher percentage of stone incidence than patients without a history of urolithiasis (19.7% vs 4.7%). Interestingly, the authors also found that the percentage of stone incidences were higher in patients with metabolic syndrome (19.7%) or components of metabolic syndrome (12/2%) than patients who did not (4.7%). Based on these results, the author stated that uninephrectomy patients are more vulnerable to stone formation in the contralateral kidney.
