EAU 2018: Changes in Stone Treatment Practice the Last 20 Years

Copenhagen, Denmark (UroToday.com) Dr. Kim Hovgaard Andreassen from Herley-Gentofte Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark investigated changes in treatment practice for renal and ureteric calculi in patients in Demark over a period of 20 years from 1996 to 2016. For this study, Dr. Andreassen collected data from the national Danish Health Registry. This included the total number of renal and ureteric calculi treatment procedures for all public and private hospitals in Denmark which included open surgery, PCNL, RIRS, and SWL.

The author found that total number of SWL treatments has been steady in this time period. However, the number of endoscopic treatments have doubled and the number of RIRS has increased 8x. Additionally, the author found that more than 90% of treatments of renal stones was SWL in 1996. However, this number has steadily declined to less than 50% in 2016. When looking at just ureteric stones, the proportion of those treated with SWL has dropped from 35% to less that 5% in favor of ureteroscopy which has doubled in the same time period.

This poster was presented as part of the stone treatment Expert-Guided Poster tour at the EAU Congress.
