SUFU 2017: Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction Research Network

Scottsdale, Arizona USA (UroToday.com) Dr. Quentin Clemens of the University of Michigan Medical Center presented an update on  symptoms from the Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction Research Network, which is a National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases-funded research system.  Its goals include identifying and explaining the subtypes of patients with lower urinary tract symptoms and improving data derived from patients experiencing lower urinary tract symptoms by developing new patient questionnaires.

Dr. Clemens described the projects that the network has undertaken since 2012, including a longitudinal cohort study with a goal enrollment of 500 men and 500 women, with the collection of clinical information, patient-reported outcome measures, and biosamples. He outlined the goals of subtyping those with lower urinary tract symptoms, but also provided valuable insight into normal and abnormal lower urinary tract functions.

Dr. Clemens also reported on the development of the Comprehensive Assessment of Self-Reported Urinary Symptoms, a 56-item instrument that is designed to be a comprehensive tool to evaluate patients with lower urinary tract symptoms in further studies.
