AUA 2017: Urine Based Rapid Molecular Diagnosis of Zika Virus

Boston, MA (UroToday.com) Best poster of the session on Infections/Inflammation/Cystic Disease of the Genitourinary Tract: Kidney & Bladder II was presented by Laura Lamb, PhD from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. The study was entitled “Urine Based Rapid Molecular Diagnosis of Zika Virus.” The authors sought to develop a urine diagnostic test that could be completed rapidly. They tested samples of urine that were spiked with Zika virus and other related arboviruses with a new method and conventional polymerase chain reaction. The new method studied uses reverse transcription loop mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP). They found that this method was valid when compared with conventional methods, and could be done in under 30 minutes.
