AUA 2016: Can a computerized ordering system reduce Foley catheter trauma?
Study looked at the use of a computerized ordering system to prevent urologic intervention for Foley catheter-related trauma (FCRT). These authors designed and implemented a set of simplified questions in an electronic medical record ordering system aimed at FCRT prevention.
Catheter placement order prompted a series of questions (e.g. history of enlarged prostate, difficult catheterizations) to pop up in the electronic system. If the answer to any question was yes, the flow chart recommended a 16/18 Fr Coude tip. After two unsuccessful attempts, a urology consult was placed. The authors did not find a significant difference in frequency of FCRT or urologic consultations after implementation of the computerized ordering system.
