AUA 2016: Infection rate after sacral neuromodulation surgery: A review of 1033 InterStim procedures - Session Highlights

San Diego, CA USA (UroToday.com) Marisa Clifton from Cleveland, OH presented data on a single institution series of sacral neuromodulation procedures. The authors aimed to determine the rate of infection and risk factors for infection. They reported on 1033 total procedures, including IPG manipulation and PNE.

Overall infection rate was 1.6%. There were no infections in PNE.

For Stage 1 procedures, infection rates were 1.5% (5/335) and for IPG manipulation, the infection rate was 1.8% (12/650).

The authors reported that primary indication for implantation did impact the rate of infection, with non-obstructive urinary retention having higher rates, however the reasons for this unexpected finding were not explored.
